Why Bother?
For those of you who are wondering, "why should I care?" or "there's only one short post! What gives?", I will begin with a brief introduction. I'm a runner, and have run competitively for about the past 5 years. Being that my teammates and I are competitive and constantly look to push ourselves to the limit, just as any good athlete does, our focus eventually turned to eating. Out of this competitive fire, the tremendous 12 challenge was born. The challenge is this: Eat 2 tremendous 12s at Perkins, which of course means eating 8 pancakes, 6 eggs, 2 servings of hash browns and 8 bacon/sausage. The eating is then followed up with a mile race, and both portions of the competition are timed. Initially, all of us were greenhorns and our first try produced some slow times and lots of vomit. But with a few more competitions under our belts, our times improved dramatically. We decided that it was time to expand the challenge to a team competition. Inviting other local runners to participate, it would eventually be a 3 team competition. Though I faltered a bit in my own performance, I placed 2nd in the eating portion with a time of 7:55, losing by only a few seconds. In the mile race, I would end in 4th place, while running a respectable 4:37 (with the winner running a scorching 4:31, and on a stomach full of pancakes and eggs mind you). Yet at the end of the day, our team would win the overall competition. So there's my story on the Tremendous Twelve Challenge, and the beginnings of an odd fascination with competitive eating. I may not be a professional competitive eater, but I do enjoy a hearty meal! See Ya
